Software Asset Management

Getting to grips with the dynamics of your Software Assets is a challenge in its own right, keeping it under control is doubly so.   The difficulty is that most auditing tools have no management capabilities, so it is impossible to enforce any policies and ensure ongoing compliance.

With its Workstation Manager product, Lanboss has created the tools to both achieve and retain compliance.   In parallel, Lanboss has developed best practises to ensure that you are always in control of your software asset:

Application Patching, Service Pack and Hotfix Maintenance

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, a computer worm that targets the Microsoft Windows operating system, was first detected in November 2008.   It used flaws in Windows software to co-opt machines and link them to a virtual computer that could be commanded remotely by its authors.

Conficker used an exploit that Microsoft had released patches for months before, yet it was able to infect literally millions of computers worldwide.   How was this possible?   Simple, organisations don't have thorough patching practises and the patches were just not implemented.

By April 2009 there were an estimated 11 million infections, Shadowserver and Conficker Working Group produced maps to illustrate the distribution of Conficker worm infected hosts.

The total cost to corporates is not known, but Conficker attacks were known to disrupt whole organisations for days, costing literally billions in lost productivity, rectification costs and business losses.

Lanboss Support Services have developed best practise and enhanced functionalities in Workstation Manager to assist organisations in keeping both their operating systems and their applications patched to the most up to date specifications.   As a service it incorporates script writing, update packaging, roll-out, result analysis and monitoring. In tight liaison with client's IT specialists, Lanboss becomes the most effective and efficient method of ensuring that their organisation's IT is as up to date as practically possible.

Scripts and Reports

One of the most awesome capabilities found in many of the Uniboss Platform products is with the Script Language. It makes our products do exactly what clients want, in effect it becomes their product, with features and capabilities only limited by the scripts they create.   The same goes for reports where clients adapt the monitoring and task results to give them an accurate finger on the pulse of their IT

Lanboss Support Services are there to not only help create, maintain and develop scripts and reports to support an IT function, but also to make sure that these are running correctly by way of remote monitoring.


Through this service Lanboss will:
  • Ensure scripts are written correctly and able to perform the required actions efficiently
  • Perform pilot testing and roll out the scripts
  • Gather results and report on any anomalies
  • Maintain scripts to cater for new conditions, versions etc
  • Produce management reports on a periodic basis
Typical responsibilities Lanboss performs with these Support Services would include Anti Virus software monitoring, restarting, re-installation, AV signature tracking and upkeep. This is often necessary where a number of popular AV engines are unable to monitor this themselves and are able to be stopped by users.   Other support roles include monitoring software rollouts, hardware upgrade programs or an outsourced part of the IT as an unbiased external audit function.

Our wealth of experience in not just creating the script language itself, but also using it in anger for our clients gives you the confidence you need.   Of course, there's always the question of script language enhancements.   Once in a while we come across the need to add a new function or procedure to support a client's specific needs.   Provided we can see a good general need for the capability, we will add it to the product, for the good of the Lanboss user community at large.
