Application remediation is a specialised field that aims to lower software licensing costs by reducing the number of licenses installed on an estate.

Starting with software audit and application usage monitoring, applications are identified for removal or replacement.   Scripts are developed, applications packaged and groups are created to control the application remediation process.

Reducing the number of installed licenses targets a number of candidate applications like:

1. Applications not in use over a period of time
2. Higher levels of software suites, where not all components are used (i.e. Frontpage in Pro Office editions)
3. Applications where a free equivalent would offer sufficient functionality
4. Software that is no longer in use
5. User installed applications, coverdisk, shareware or other
6. 'Bonus' software like Google Toolbar or OpenOffice

While some of the above may not have direct license costs at first glance, it is quite common for application vendors to give away licenses for 'personal use', but expect payment for corporate use.   By removing superfluous applications, there is an inherent improvement in performance, more straight-forward help desk calls as well as the benefit of helping to maintain corporate IT standards.   All for significantly less than the cost of building and rolling out new workstation images!
