Maintaining Corporate IT Standards
'Where do you want to go today' was a brilliant strap line used by Microsoft at the launch of Windows 95. It hailed new user freedom and easy to use computers, but for Corporate IT providers, it has meant that users are now accustomed to installing their own applications, devices and changing Windows settings. After rolling out a fresh desktop, it is not long before it has moved away from the Corporate standard and after prolonged use of the workstation, it varies so far from the standards that it can no longer be supported using the standard approaches.
Recognising this issue, Lanboss developed a valuable suite of Management capabilities into the Workstation Manager. A short list of these follows:
- Deleting multiple files across the entire machine (~ xdel %*Personal%\*.bak /s)
- File copying (~ xcopy LOCAL:\*.mp3 g:\thanks /s)
- Application Deployment using MSI and AXT deployment methods
- File Transfer to and from the workstation
- Patch Delivery including XP SP2
- Ad-hoc file and registry changes
- Changing printers and settings
Alerts - an Early Warning System
As with any system, things change over time with workstation and this will eventually lead to problems, often requiring a technician visit to correct. The Workstation Manager agent has a live alerting capability that provides an early warning of pending issues to give you the opportunity to preemptively sort the issue out, to perform 'Fix before Failure’. Checks can be scheduled to monitor:
- A network drive being unavailable
- Applications that are hanging
- Applications being installed or removed
- CPU running persistently at 100% utilization
- Local disks running low on available space
- Users adding removable storage devices (like USB memory sticks)
