Octane
Need to send information to suppliers or partners? Octane allows you to control who may create discs, encrypt disk contents and control who may read the information
In October 2007, the UK population was shocked by the news that a government department had lost two optical computer discs containing the personal details of 25 million child benefit claimants. The data had been written on the discs without any encryption or compression. Data encryption utilities and optical disc authoring tools have been available for some time, but not as a single, coherent and easy to use product. Lanboss immediately set about creating a secure CD/DVD authoring product that will not only will protect data whilst in transit with integrated encryption, but also be easy to use for users, as well as being centrally controlled and audited.
The product that was created is called Lanboss Octane. Fully integrated with the Uniboss architecture, Octane gives you control over who can and who cannot use recordable media on a user-by-user or machine-by-machine basis. It can also forcibly encrypt all disks that are made and block off the user's ability to use other burning applications to help with your data security policy.
Octane is a simple to use, yet powerful, CD/DVD authoring application designed to make the task of burning discs as simple and secure as possible. Take control of your users' burning desires and keep your data where it belongs, on your systems.

When creating a data project, checking the 'Encrypt/Compress Data' checkbox will put your selected data into an Octane Vault File before it's burned, copied or inserted into an ISO image. The Octane Vault File main feature is its ability to be encrypted, so it can be used to protect data from being accessed by unauthorised users. It can also be compressed, have an expiry date set against it and carry some information about the file's creator and data. To open the Octane file after it's created, the receiver of the file will need to use the Octane File Reader (free download from www.lanboss.com).
The options available for the Octane file are displayed in the sequence of images below:
Originator info: all necessary contact information to reach the data's originator. Contents info: used by the originator to add some information to inform the receiver about the contents of the file.
Encryption: if Encryption is selected, the password required to open the Octane file will have to be entered and confirmed. Password strength requirements may be in place and the user will be informed if they are not met. Compression: several options may be available for the compression type. Some types of data are already compressed and may not benefit from this option. File Reader Inclusion: you can include a copy of the Octane File Reader with your data on the disk. If it's a CD/DVD that you are burning, select it to auto-start when the receiver inserts the optical cd/dvd disc in the drive.
Expiry Date: the last date when the Octane file can be opened (only enabled if 'Use Encryption' is selected). If the recipient attempts to open the disk at any time after this expiry date, it will not open, which makes the disk totally useless. Copyright Message: A message to be displayed every time an attempt is made to open the file.

The Octane File Reader is needed to open any Octane Vault file, whether it was encrypted, compressed or neither, and irrespective of the manner in which that file was received (CD/DVD, USB, email, etc.). To access the contents of an Octane Vault file, it has to be opened in the Octane Reader. Depending on the options selected by its creator, opening an Octane Vault File will bring up a few messages and dialog boxes before access to the file contents is granted. The messages displayed can be:
A Copyright message dialog box with the message that was included by the file's creator.
The password dialog box, if the sender encrypted the file, the recipient must enter the password to access the Vault File.
After a file has been successfully opened, its file structure and contents are displayed in the contents panel. Some information about its size and compression ratio is also displayed in the status bar.
You can now access some additional information about the file contents and the file's creator (if its creator included that information when generating it) by clicking on the 'Octane file Information' button.

More and more computers are being supplied with CD/DVD writers and stripped down versions of burning applications. Corporates have become frustrated with trying to support, manage and maintain lots of different disk making solutions. The fundamental problem is that users have the ability to create optical discs, often the only solution to prevent the wholesale copying of company sensitive information has been to remove the writers from workstations.
